Looking back at the past season SS14 we will notice the gradual return of 1960’s Mod fashion trend seeping back into the high street and catwalk silhouette’s. This era is well and truly a shrine to short skirts, the use of shapes and the now new trend “Clash of Colours”. The beautiful thing about it is that not much has been changed perhaps a little more casual but those essential qualities that make up the Mod trend are still what make this now new trend. It’s truly the circle of life!
Prabal Gurung adorns his models with thick materials ranging from quilted wool and layered fur cutouts of hot pinks against reds and earthy greens with citrus-neon greens. Christian Diors, newly appointed creative director Raf Simmons takes a more playful approach with primary colours against tertiary pinks using drapery to form shapes and dress’ with tear-outs, nipped at the waist with a blossoming flower bottom half. In a sense the graphic finish that consummate the Clash of the Colours celebrates the recent news of women leading in the technology industry- if not it’s a good representation nonetheless.
Colour blocking is no news to us- of course, however when a variety of textures , cut outs and revisiting silhouettes we start to see things in a different light. It’s as if Mod got a three dimensional revamp. Roksanda Ilincic’s flowing dresses embellished with cutouts of cobalt blue or burgundy as a base which we also find in the Dries Van Noten show. Burgundy is undoubtedly a winter go-to colour and we witness the marrying of the latter with icy blues and a clean camel colour from both designers. If you’re lost in a limbo of colour, harness that confusion into creativity and assemble a clean graphic finish- you can start with a primary colour then a colour that is formed when mixed with the latter, i.e bright red with a hot pink, or even a tangerine orange. The rule is to be as playful as possible even with muted colours!
