Michael Kors has done it again, and what better way to foresee next season’s trends than looming into Michael Kors SS15 collection. A bit biased, yes, but Michael Kors is a designer who recognises and appreciates femininity. He continuously brings collections that are light and feminine.
The opening show has his models in crisp white outfits. All white, a recurring spring/ summer trend that we can’t seem to get enough of (and has started to slightly loom into autumn/ winter). You can criticize him for not bringing something new to the plate but the all-white outfits came in the form of lace, thick beaded embroidery, and as 3D appliqué. The looks are pretty, ladylike and easy to wear. It feels as though Michael Kors is trying to make summer, summer. The effortless looks in his collection embody a very retro summer essence.
He was giving his classic silhouettes a hint of nautical style. A trend we have already seen in Menswear with Rockport’s SS15 lookbook focusing on the theme. Michael gives us nautical, but not as we know it. The theme sprung out from knitwear, leather belts and sandals and, of course, showed up in floral patterned prints. An unexpected combination which that unambiguously reference a proud seafaring lady, with a sailor’s yellow coat and a Breton stripe cashmere sweater. The flawless 50’s beach summer look (modelled by Candice Swanepoel) is going to be the ultimate beach look next season. The collection is a holiday dream wardrobe. Fifties circle skirts with printed with florals (and matching crop tops), and the open midriff makes the looks contemporary. Some were embellished, some were in khaki – there was a girly-girl silhouette for every occasion.
What makes Michael Kor’s SS15 collection the perfect summer collection is the ease of the ensembles, summer is just not for us to try too hard. Not only are the looks comfortable, they’re relatable too. Looks we can easily replicate on the high street (more so at home).
The shirt-and-skirt combos are one of the dominant themes on the caltwalks and soon to be on the high street. A combination of the American sportswear and the feminine contemporary lady; something that Michael Kors excels at creating. He also showcased gingham (a budding trend for next season, see Altuzarra).
Kors’ collection is your go to next season, for timeless and yet current pieces. Proving that he still has his ear to the ground when it comes to being able to pick up on the latest fascinations of the fashion industry and as each season, he selects an era- and sometimes a muse- to inspire him.
